THE PUNAKAWAN (“CLOWN-SERVANTS”)
In Balinese wayang, there are two pairs of clown servants. Tualen and Merdah, father and son, are the servants to the protagonists and Delem and Sangut, older and younger brother, are the servants to theantagonists. While these characters directly interact with the characters in the story, they are also outside of the dramatic flow and they comment on the action in a given play. Here, Tualen and Merdah are the attendants to Indra and the gods and Delem and Sangut are the attendants to Misasura and the Raksasa.
